Nelly Adam Malik, the widow of former Vice President Adam Malik, passed away on Sunday evening, aged 82, after three days of treatment for a stroke at Jakarta's MMC Hospital.
"Mrs. Nelly was admitted to the hospital on Friday at 11:30 a.m," Berliana, a nurse on duty at the hospital, told Antara news agency.
According to Berliana, Nelly had a non-hemorrhagic stroke. She was taken to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit at 4:40 p.m on Friday.
Members of Nelly's family were at the hospital at the time of her death.
Nelly was buried at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on Monday.
While her husband was known for his journalistic and diplomatic achievements, Nelly was recognized for her tireless philanthropic activities, particularly in the 23 years after her husband's death from liver cancer in 1984.
Nelly was born in Jakarta on May 15, 1925 and educated in one of the Dutch East Indies schools set up for students from privileged families.
She had four sons and one daughter with Adam, who was one of the founders of the Antara state news agency.
Adam later become foreign minister and the third vice president of Indonesia, serving under Soeharto from March 1978 to March 1983.
Nelly held various positions throughout her life. She founded an Indonesian women's organization in Moscow in 1960 when her husband served as Sukarno's ambassador to the then Soviet Union (1959-1963).
Other posts included vice chairwoman of Golkar from 1973 to 1978 and member of the nation's parliament from 1971 to 1978.
One year after her husband's death, Nelly set up the Adam Malik Foundation, which built a museum and library in Jakarta, as well as a nursing academy and a hospital in Medan, North Sumatra.
The museum was set up at her house on Jl. Diponegoro 29, which holds as many as 5,000 artifact from Adam's private collection, including ceramics, statues and precious stones.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla, along with their spouses, paid their last respects to Nelly at her residence on Monday. Also seen were former MPR Deputy Speaker A.M. Fatwa, Constitutional Court chairman Jimly Asshiddiqie and former DPR Speaker Akbar Tanjung. (02)
